The race for the next leader of Rockland County went all red, white and blue this past week when Ed Day was given the official nod to represent the GOP team in the upcoming Rockland County Executive election at the Rockland County Republican Committee’s convention. Note: After additional research on this topic, it appears that the perceived imbalance of Town of Ramapo Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals membership is root in jurisdictional authority. The boards only have jurisdiction in those parts of Ramapo not in villages (in which case, village planning and zoning takes precedence over the town). The makeup of the boards was set by former Supervisor Herb Reisman.
Keeping with its tradition of splashy articles that detail the inner workings of the Town of Ramapo, the friendly outliers at Preserve Ramapo recently published a scathing overview of the composition of several important town boards.
“Monsey has a better than 70% majority/super majority voice on planning and zoning decisions that affect all the villages throughout the town,” reports Preserve Ramapo in another blistering review of Town of Ramapo operations.

After an invigorating weekend of leisure, wrap the whole thing up Sunday, April 28, with the Suffern Street Fair along Lafayette Avenue. The Street Fair will feature an Antique, Classic & Custom Car & Motorcycle Show, on display on Chestnut Street, between Lafayette Avenue and the NJTransit underpass. The dinner hour was kicking into gear at Suffern’s Hacienda Don Manuel, a sort of secret favorite restaurant in western Rockland. One table in particular was animated in the colorful surroundings.
Members of the Suffern Chamber of Commerce were immersed in a serious discussion regarding one of the village’s anchors – the Lafayette Theater, which opened its doors in 1924 and has continued to evolve and attract visitors ever since. The fruits of a lot of behind-the-scenes labor were celebrated Sunday at Harmony Hall. The old Jacob Sloat house that sits atop a hill off of Rt. 17 in Sloatsburg, and at one time overlooked Sloat’s prosperous cotton twine mills along the Erie Railroad tracks, is finally due for its make-over.
