Rattlesnakes and nature walks at Harmony Hall Saturday

Harmony Hall in Sloatsburg will host a Summer Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 20, from 2 p.m. through 5 p.m. that will include nature walks and arts & crafts for kids.

Saturday offers the opportunity to hike up the Harmony Hall Trail to Liberty Rock and also learn all about those local neighbors living nearby — rattlesnakes.

The Ramapo Mountains are home to one of the most dense rattlesnake populations in New York State. And Randy Stechert, field biologist and consultant for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) of New York State, knows all about the rattlesnakes in this region.

Harmony Hall will hold a special Summer Solstice Celebration Saturday, June 20, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. that includes a presentation by Stechert, guided nature hike up nearby Liberty Rock, a look at the good things growing on the Harmony Hall grounds, and plenty of funs and games for the kids.

Stechert has been studying the Torne Valley rattlesnake population for years via field studies that includes planting surface transmitters on a number of active timber rattlers to map movement. Stechert will give a brief presentation on Saturday and be available to answer questions.

SummerSolstice2015adSaturday’s Solstice Celebration will include music and a Arts & Crafts by creative arts educator Tenley Marshall Escoffery where kids will get learn about the solstice through the creation of sun sticks and masks.

A signature, family-friendly event, the Harmony Hall Summer Solstice is presented by the Town of Ramapo in partnership with the Friends of Harmony Hall ~ Jacob Sloat House and is free to the public.
