Town of Ramapo Selects New Police Chief

It was time to pick a captain for the Town of Ramapo. Led by Supervisor Chris St. Lawrence, the Town Board had to decide on a new Chief for the Ramapo Police Department to replace the recently retired Peter Brower.

Captains Brad Weidel and Thomas Cokeley were interviewed for the top spot. After just an hour of deliberation, Supervisor St. Lawrence announced that Brad Weidel was selected.

It was like choosing between Lebron James and Michael Jordan, St. Lawrence said of the selection between Weidel and Cokeley.

Weidel has been with the Ramapo Police Department since 1980.

LoHud writer Steve Lieberman had a full recap of the town’s selection process, which took place on Groundhog Day, complete with video of St. Lawrence making his announcement.

Former Chief Peter Brower came under some controversy during his last years in office as he was often New York State’s highest paid public official, making upwards of $380,000 for the comparatively small Ramapo Police small.

The Ramapo Police Department covers the Village of Sloatsburg — the Village gave up it’s own police department in the mid-1990s in favor of the town coverage.
