The Sloatsburg Municipal is filling up with water this week, in time for Memorial Day and a bit of sunshine and higher temperatures. Pool gates officially open Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28 from 12 noon until 8 p.m. The pool will be then continue to be open weekends throughout June, when the regular season begins, Saturday, June 23. The Municipal Pool season runs through Sunday, September 23.

The pool was recently cleaned and resurfaced by H&H Painting, owned and operated by locals Dean and Justin Artrip. With the fresh paint and removal of the yew bushes that bordered the pool and blocked views, the whole dynamic of the pool area has changed. Sloatsburg Public Works crews have cleaned and greened the grounds, which now feature an expansive open lawn. The pool also welcomes new Swim Facility Supervisor Dee Leone, who will handle day-to-day management and operation of the municipal pool. Another first — the pool will feature two co-head lifeguards to maximize safety and efficiency. Lifelong Sloatsburg resident and former pool senior life guard Thomas Buckley Jr. will be elevated to one of the head lifeguard positions. Buckley will work in tandem with newcomer Robert Stein overseeing the pool’s staff of lifeguards.

Additional upgrades include new vending machines that dispense water, soda, snacks and ice cream — and memorial benches, available for sponsorship by residents. Village Trustee Pete Akey, who along with Trustee Barbara Berntsen, helps oversee Sloatsburg’s public recreation facilities, recently signed up SnackRite Vending, a snack vending company out of Walden, NY to provide snack and drink machines at both the pool and community fields.

Residents can register for pool membership online at Sloatsburgny.com. Click on the Recreation Department and then follow the link to Pool Passes where an online registration application is available.

The Sloatsburg Municipal Pool fees for 2012 are $300 for a family membership, $125 for individuals and $25 for senior citizens. Daily guests fees run $4 for adults ($5 for weekends) and $3 for children ($4 for weekends).

Pool Memberships are required by all residents entering the pool area and can be purchased at the Village Clerk’s Office. Adjacent to the municipal pool complex is a children’s playground designed for both toddler and adolescents.
