Suffern High School Sports Season Gears Up

With Suffern High School sports teams getting top rankings in a recent Rockland County coaches poll, it’s that time of year again for physicals and to get recertified.

SHSboysvollyballSports physicals and recertifications for fall high school sports begin at Suffern High School, starting Wednesday, August 14.

To recertify, athletes must have had a physical within the past year that was certified by the school doctor. Athletes who intend to participate in high school sports must report to the Suffern High School Nurses’ Office during their sports’ designated recertification session with a completed emergency card. A short on-site questionnaire will also be given to students.

Suffern High School athletics team garnered five of the top ten spots in an annual ranking of Rockland County’s top 25 varsity sports programs produced by Tom Doherty, President of the Rockland County Coaches’ Association.

SHSgirlslacrosse“Having so many teams recognized among the best sports programs in Rockland County is an honor we can all be proud of,” noted Suffern High School Athletic Director Andy Guccione. “These rankings serve as a testament to the outstanding devotion and work ethic of our student-athletes, as well as the leadership of our teaching and coaching staff.”

The top SHS teams for 2012-2013 include

#1 – Girls Spring Track & Field

#5 – Girls Cross Country

#6 – Girls Lacrosse

#7 – Girls Indoor Track

#8 – Ice Hockey

#12 – Field Hockey

A parent or guardian may recertify an athlete who is unable to report during their designated recertification session.

The Suffern High School’s Varsity Boys Volleyball team won the 2012-13 Section I Class A championships and made it to the New York State Regional Class A Final Four and received a special mention for an outstanding season. The team wasn’t in the ranking because of the small number of Section I teams.

Rankings are determined according team scoring on 11 criteria, including national championship results, New York State Federation Championship results, New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championship and Regional Championship results and Final State Rankings.

Notes on student athlete Recertifications: A parent or guardian may recertify an athlete who is unable to report during their designated recertification session.

Wednesday, August 14 

8am-10am Football & Cheerleading

10am-12pm: Soccer, Boys & Girls

12pm-2pm: Volleyball, Boys & Girls

Friday, August 16

8am-9am: Cross Country, Boys & Girls

9am-10am: Tennis

10am-11am: Swimming

11am-12pm: Field Hockey

Monday, August 19

7am-9am: Recertifications for any athletes unable to report during his/her sports’ designated recertification session.

Tuesday, August 20

7am-9am: Recertifications for any athletes unable to report during his/her sports’ designated recertification session.

Physicals

High school athletes in need of a physical must report to the Suffern High School Nurses’ Office on one of the two dates below. Athletes receiving a physical must arrive with both a completed emergency card and a completed Sports Questionnaire/Medical Evaluation form. The form must be signed, in ink, by a parent or guardian; explanations for all “yes” responses must be provided on the back of the form.
