The Village of Sloatsburg celebrates its 90th anniversary with a year-long series of activities and events, led by the Sloatsburg 90th Anniversary Committee, culminating with an October 2019 parade down Route 17 through the village center. The Sloatsburg Fire Department will organize and lead the parade. The village voted to form in October 1929.

Back in October, 1929, the Village of Sloatsburg was officially born, though this lower Hudson Valley rural community has roots going back to the Revolutionary War and longer. Back then Route 17 was already a well-traveled roadway that followed along the railroad tracks and rivers.

Still a small mill town in 1929, Sloatsburgers voted 10 to 1 to incorporate as a village. These days some of the landmark structures that dotted Route 17 at that time have undergone renovation, with businesses that are helping to drive Sloatsburg’s current revitalization — think the historic Glenwood Hotel that now houses Characters Bar and Restaurant or the Blue Barn and Waldron homes that included the village blacksmith shop now are part of the Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club complex.

A special Keepsake Journal will be produced as part of the 90th Celebration and will be gifted to all Sloatsburg residents and businesses. It will include coverage of our event celebrations, stories not only about Sloatsburg’s history, but also interesting facts. Residents are asked to contribute stories, photos and respond to our online survey as possible content to be included.

Residents and local businesses also have the opportunity to help sponsor the events and the Keepsake Journal by sending in contributions care of the Village Hall or by purchasing advertising space.

Sloatsburg will celebrate its 90th Anniversary in October of 2019, with year-long festivities and events culminating with an parade down Route 17 and the Village main street. The 90th Anniversary Committee has been hard at work planning the year of events that will include significant moments in the village’s history as well as a school musical and fireworks display.

The Committee has worked with the Village to highlight some of the more historical moments and trends that have impacted the culture and character of the community. You can follow along as the Sloatsburg 90th Anniversary Committee has a full spectrum of social media channels, including a website.
