The hazards of local firefighting along the New York Thruway were on display this past Friday, December 16, when the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a car carrier fire.

A car carrier caught fire on the New York Thruway near the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza on Friday evening, December 16. The Sloatsburg and Hillburn Fire Departments responded.

A car carrier caught fire near the Travel Plaza Friday and was ablaze when the Sloatsburg Fire Department responded at approximately 8:36 p.m. and kicked into action by flowing water. But the nature of the blaze, which included rubber from tires, needed the expertise of the Hillburn Fire Department‘s fire fighting foam.

The SFD is one of the many fire departments contracted by the New York State to respond to Thruway incidents, wth the SFD responsible for specific mile markers that includes the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza. A majority of the SFD’s calls are for NYS Thruway incidents, which often can be the most unpredictable and hazardous due to volume and type of traffic traveling the Thruway.
