Scouts Clean Up Ambulance Corp

The Sloatsburg Ambulance Corp got all cleaned up and ship shape over the weekend, thanks to a few finishing touches supplied by the guys from Cub and Boy Scout Troop 2146.

“As part of a scout leader project I’m working on called Wood Badge, I wanted to enable our pack to do more service in our community,” said local Webelos leader Brian Colton, who worked closely with Scoutmaster Tom Lorentz and Sloatsburg Ambulance Corp President Matt Gannon. “Sloatsburg Ambulance Corp has been very scout-friendly,” Colton said. “The boy scouts have already been doing service there by finishing off the second floor rooms. It seemed natural for all of us to partner up together and do something fun and useful,” said Colton.

The day was focused on helping clean up the aftermath of Thomas Lorentz III’s Eagle Scout project, which involved the renovation of several second floor rooms at the Sloatsburg Ambulance Corp. Lorentz’ troop buddies also pitched in for the months-long building project. While the Boy Scouts helped remove larger pieces of sheetrock, wood and metal, Cub Scout Pack ’46 set up a “bucket brigade” to get all the smaller, safer pieces into the big green dumpster waiting outside. In a display of teamwork, scouts and adults formed a line from the building’s doorway all the way up the steps to the second floor for a good old-fashioned hand off of discarded wallboard and other project debris.

“The kids formed a bucket brigade (with help from adults) and worked together, older and younger scouts, cleaning up the second floor, so that all scouts from Tigers to Eagle Scouts could participate,” Colton said. “The older scouts helped the younger ones and vice versa. It was very touching to see such teamwork.”

Currently, Troop ’46 is setting an impressive mark by graduating a succession of local Eagle Scouts, including Justin LeanzaDaniel Patrick Green, Daniel O’Leary, Jonathan Kraus, Matt Leanza — who will hold his Eagle Court of Honor at the Eagle Valley Firehouse in Tuxedo this March 16 — as well as Lorentz. Lorentz just recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout with his renovation project. Lorentz will have his Court of Honor on April 14 at the Sloatsburg Ambulance Corps building.

The younger pack members also got a guided tour of the Ambulance Corps, with pizza and an illustrated lesson on the true spirit of teamwork during an ambulance run, where they got to experience what it means to ride to the rescue in real life.
