Ramapo Central Builds Community Through Family Night

Posted on 10 March 2015 by Editor

Mid March is nearly here already, with Spring Break only a few weeks away. But the drab of a long winter still clings on. Two enterprising Ramapo Central School District teachers have banded together create the upcoming Family Night initiative, which encourages families to enjoy an evening together. Soon this winter will thaw and spring will have many students careening off toward the end of semester.

Family Night

On Monday, March 16, there will be no district-related homework, tests to study for the following day, sports, or extracurricular activities after 5 p.m. Instead, Ramapo Central families are encouraged to spend quality downtime together.

Suffern Middle School social studies teacher KC Davan and RP Connor Elementary School teacher Michele McKiernan thought that a districtwide family day, one without homework or the need to study, and that would create unity and community throughout the district.

The pair, with support from districtwide PTA volunteers, has assembled a variety of business that will offer special discounts on the Monday, March 16. Both the Suffern and Sloatsburg Library will participate in the event as well.

KC Davan, an administrative intern with the RCSD, said that the idea for Family Night was borrowed from a Long Island school district and is meant to set one special week day aside that allows the family to spend time together.
