On The Village Scene

If it’s on the Village Board agenda, then it must be official.

VillageHallThe Sloatsburg Village Board met Tuesday evening, with two particular agenda items of interest for many village residents. The Pine Grove Sewer Project is officially scheduled to go to bid in August. The Rockland County Sewer District 1 project is then expected to break ground sometime in November, with the construction work expected to last one year.

Sloatsburg Department of Public Works crews have been patching up Pine Grove Lakes roads lately, giving residents a noticeably smoother ride. Now, with the Sewer District bid process confirmed, the idea of sewers in that rocky Sloatsburg neighborhood are no longer mere rumors.

sloatsburgstation2Another topic touched on by the board was the MTA Metro North Sloatsburg Train Station update. The MTA “sprucing” up project is long overdue as the train station is one of the more homely. The summer project will install new glass and molding on the station shelter, add new station signage, repaint platforms areas, and perform a general clean up.

The project elicited interesting comments from residents on the Village of Sloatsburg Facebook site that ranged from cheeky to a shrug.

Chris — What about all those nickels they get on empty beer can/bottle returns?

Matt — Please feel free to use any of the coins that people placed on the tracks to flatten that they never got back.

Raymond — I bet a fair hike is on the way.

Chris (again) — New glass and moulding! Oh my!

Matthew — Sounds like a whole lot of nothing being done.

The board also congratulated Sloatsburg’s recent scholarship winners, which included: Justin Leanza for the Chief Joseph Miele Schloarship, Kelly Bade for the Joseph S. Vega Scholarship, Gina Velardi was awarded the Rhoda Naderman Memorial Scholarship, Daniel O’Leary received the Robert V. Conklin Scholarship, and Gillian Dube won the Chamber of Commerce Award.

Wait, does Sloatsburg even have an active Chamber of Commerce? How does an inactive Chamber chapter give an award?
