Fire Hydrant Patrol

Update: With the mini mountains of snow shoveled from walkways this past week, area emergency services have requested some community assistance.

Sloatsburg’s All Volunteer Fire Department members are making an effort Sunday to clear the village’s 140 hydrants. Residents can help by clearing a hydrant closest to your home.

Make the jobs of the volunteers at both the Sloatsburg Fire Department and Suffern Fire Department a little easier — do a little community service shoveling.

The Suffern Fire Department has gone directly to village residents with a request  for those with fire hydrants in front of their homes to clear all snow away in case of an emergency.

Most municipalities have local laws which compel owners, occupants or tenants of a property with a fire hydrant to keep it clear of obstructions, including snow.

hydrantheroAdditionally, the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services has reminded homeowners and local businesses to make sure they keep areas surrounding fire hydrants clear so that firefighters can connect their equipment without delays. The recent snow accumulation and street plowing has made many hydrants throughout the county inaccessible.

The call has gone out for homeowners and business owners to help with the effort to make fire hydrants accessible.

One never knows for whom the bell tolls.
