Ramapo Central Schools Board Meeting

To change a name or not change a name.

The Ramapo Central School District has moved to counter confusion on Google related to bad press about the East Ramapo School District.

RCSD has received input from the community on changing its name to the Suffern Central School District. The Board of Education will hold further public discussion on the topic at its Tuesday, January 10, regular BOE meeting.

The Ramapo Central School District was formed some 75 years ago to serve the children of Suffern and the surrounding areas, including the villages of Sloatsburg and Hillburn.

School Board President Theresa DeFalco said in a Journal News article that some believe dropping Ramapo from the school district’s name would “be a blow to local heritage,” citing the historical value of the Ramapo Mountains and Ramapo River and local history dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times.

The conversation on a possible Suffern Central will continue on Tuesday, January 10, at the historical Hillburn district headquarters.
