Double The Fun

The Suffern Mounties boys hockey team gets officially feted by the Village of Suffern Wednesday evening, with a parade down Lafayette Avenue that ends at the Monument. Sunday night’s impromptu street party organized after the hockey team’s dramatic state championship run was just a dress rehearsal. Suffern hockey coach Rob Schelling, a guidance counselor at the high school, was also named NYS Division I Hockey Coach of the Year.

“You dream about this,” said Suffern High School senior forward Willie Sanchez, after the boys hockey team successfully skated through the playoffs, winning their first Div 1 state championship in 20 years.

The Suffern Police Department advised that on Wednesday, March 14th, at 6:00 p.m., the Village of Suffern will be hosting a parade for the New York State State Division 1 Champion Suffern High School Hockey Team. Expect traffic disruption along Lafayette and Washington Aves due to the parade. But if you’re a Mountie hockey fan, Suffern is the place to be this evening to show support.

Suffern Mayor Dagan Lacorte and other local dignitaries are expected to be on hand for an official team presentation and acknowledgement. Afterward, the public is invited into the Suffern Community Center on Washington Avenue for refreshments. The Suffern High School band will take part and local fire houses are expected to officially ferry the players along the parade route.

After trailing for three periods in Sunday afternoon’s championship game, the Suffern Mounties boys rallied to beat the Pittsford Panthers at Utica Auditorium and win their first hockey state crown in nearly 20 years. The Mounties playoff run was nothing if not breathtaking. In Saturday evening’s semi-final game, the team battled from behind, fighting against the No. 1 ranked West Genesee Wildcats through four eight-minute overtime periods before stunning West Genesee in a shoot-out to win the Division 1 semifinal.

The team then returned from Utica Sunday evening with a police escort  into the Suffern Village center and an emotional ride up Lafayette Avenue. Big crowds of excited students lined downtown as fire trucks from the Suffern, Tallman and Hillburn fire departments escorted the team.

Wednesday evening parade and award presentation will officially embrace and crown the boys hockey team as community heroes.
