Cub Scouts from local Pack 46 recently took a trip to Massachusetts for an overnight adventure onboard a battleship.

scoutsonship4Cub Scout Pack 46 of Tuxedo and Sloatsburg, NY recently visited Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA, to explore the world’s largest collection of historic naval ships. The scouts had a full tour of duty as they visited the battleship USS Massachusetts, the destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, and the submarine Lionfish, as well as several other ships in the cove.

Battleship Cove allows the scouts up close access to the workings of these vessels, which have been painstakingly maintained and are in excellent condition with many museum exhibits and historical artifacts.

scoutsonship3“We were looking for a new and exciting fall trip for our pack, and to spread our wings a little further from the local area,” said Brian Colton, trip organizer and Pack Committee Chair. “After talking with a number of other cub scout packs that had gone, this trip was highly recommended. The boys and families really enjoyed the offerings, especially sleeping overnight in 4-person bunks!”

Scouts and families slept overnight on the Massachusetts and were treated to on-board meals, knot tying and Morse code classes, story telling and a showing of classic WWII Disney cartoons — plus the movie Battleship.

The trip gave the scouts knowledge about the veterans that served in the military during that time and an appreciation of the sacrifices they needed to make. Orientation to the Battleship was conducted by a veteran that served on the Massachusetts during its entire commission. Scouts got to meet several other veterans who shared their memories of the WWII era.
