A Tree Grows Poolside

Posted on 23 January 2013 by Editor

All those Sloatsburg Community Pool members out there, here’s a chance to have your two cents counted. Sloatsburg Village Trustee Peter Akey, who shares village cultural and recreational oversight, is soliciting community advice on tree replacement at the village pool.

Akey, along with Department of Public Works Supervisor Mike DeMartino and his crew, have slowly been upgrading the community pool and grounds. Last season, the entire pool was repainted with rubber-based pool paint by H&H Painting out of Tuxedo. Before that, there was the removal of the old yew bushes that surrounded the pool, either blocking views or acting as a public towel rack. The pool is now ringed with a green grassy boarder. Akey and the village board also had new vending machines installed at the pool last season that dispense water, soda, snacks, and ice cream.

Another Akey effort was the Municipal Pool Bench Drive, where 100% recycled KirbyBuilt backless benches are available for sponsorship by residents. The benches will have attached stainless steel placards for inscription purposes and cost $290, including the inscripted placard.

“Last year parents and members of the pool came to me and said they’d like to have more benches and seats to get closer to the water to watch the kids,” said Akey. “And I said, okay, I’ll see what I can do.

Now, the two ornamental cherry trees between the main pool and the children’s pool are at the end of their long lives. Tangled and withered, the village wants to replace them with something livelier.

Visit the village FB site and leave a comment or suggestion. The idea is to replace the ornamental cherry trees with a tree or two that is able to grow within a contained area — and that won’t grow too tall, wide or unruly.

Any suggestions?
