A Sunny Sloatsburg Saturday Round Up

Posted on 09 March 2013 by Editor

Saturday in Sloatsburg is sunny with a lot of activity going on around the village.

Get rid of “More Than A Battery” today by taking any old small appliance or electrical thingy to Suffern Village Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fresh off politicking in Albany, NY State Senator David Carlucci (D), will spend some mobile office hour time in Sloatsburg this afternoon. Carlucci worked with the state Senate leadership this past week to restore $120 million dollars in proposed spending cuts. The senator, who represents the 38th district, which includes most of Rockland County and parts of Westchester County, is on hand this morning at the Sloatsburg at the Municipal Building Saturday, March 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. Catch him while you can.

Then there’s the Tuxedo Farmers’ Market, which is holding a winter market Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. at the Tuxedo Train Station. Winter vendors include  Bella Mozzarella, Cedar Rock Products, Healthway Farms, Kiernan Farm, The Little Bake Shop, Peg’s Eggs, Honey & Chicken, and Pie Eyed Bar Pies.

Over 35 people have already signed up to join Chuck Stead for an educational storied walking tour Saturday morning, starting at the Ramapo Saltbox at 10 a.m. The expedition hikes from the Environmental Research Center (ERC) so wear walking boots because you’ll ramble and trudge across the valley to any number of places on the history walk. Sponsored by the Historical Society of Rockland County, the Hamlet of Ramapo “Walk Through History” provides a yesteryear window into a little known historic area of Rockland County.

This is a two mile walk over level paved surface. 1.5 to 2 hours, with an opportunity for an extended visit at the Saltbox after the walk.

The walk will move from the Saltbox and cross Torne Brook while the discussion ranges through the history of agriculture around Torne Brook Farm, now a winery, the remains of the hilltop Hamilton property, and the old Hamlet houses themselves, where local Billy Cuomo will share some secrets. From the Iron Bridge you’ll be able to survey the repurposed remains of the old Pierson brothers’ businesses once called the Ramapo Works — patron of the Hamlet. Right on the Ramapo River. In the shadow of the mountain.

And last but not least, Suffern Mayor Dagan Lacorte and Recycling Committee Chairman Bruce Simon have set up a battery drop off at the Suffern Municipal Building today, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is an opportunity for the residents of Suffern to help domestic violence victims and to support our troops,” Lacorte said. “By donating old electronics, our wonderful community can help those in need.  The Village of Suffern continues to go out of its way to support these kinds of efforts, and I am proud to host this event.”

“More Than Battery” day takes place in the parking lot of Suffern Village Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to accept recyclable material, including all batteries, CFL light bulbs, E-waste, including old computers, monitors, stereo equipment, TVs, small appliances, etc., cell phones, which will be donated to domestic violence victims and to active military personnel, and all medications – over the counter and prescription.

And then tonight, don’t forget the Suffern Middle School play, Little Shop of Horrors. For only $12 you’ll get to see a fun show, with all the young talent singing and dancing.
