Friday proved a perfect day for Sloatsburg Elementary School’s annual Olympic Day, that right of passage where kids take to the field for competition to cap the school year.

The day celebrates sportsmanship and community, with many many parents, village officials and community leaders participating in the day of events that culminates in a parent/student picnic lunch.

Sponsored by the Ramapo Valley Rotary, with additional support by various Sloatsburg businesses, Olympic Day features a series of student competitions, from foot races and a long jump to a basketball shoot, fiercely fought soccer matches, and the infamous pizza box race, where students team up and race while seeing how many pizza boxes they can pick up and carry along the way.

Different classes represent an assortment of countries from around the world and wear colorful t-shirts that reflect their country. The day of competition ends with a tug-of-war contest and then an  an overall champion is crowned.

This year Principal Joe Lloyd added colorful live tweets from Sloatsburg Elementary School’s social media Twitter channel, topping things off with an Animoto slide show of the day’s action.
