The Board of Education meeting was at the public comments portion, with part of the evening’s discussion focused on the district’s changes to its transportation policy for the upcoming 2016/17 school year.

A PR professional with a hand in the Jewish advocacy group OJPAC and vociferous advocate for the orthodox community in Rockland County, Gestetner politely delivered a message to the Ramapo Central School District board, suggesting that changes in the district’s transportation policy could have long range implications.

Ignore a growing community, he said, and your future might become like that of the East Ramapo Central School DistrictGestetner was apparently referring to East Ramapo’s on-going issues with a large Jewish orthodox community that primarily sends its kids to non public schools. The school district also went through a period of years where nearly the entire school board was comprised of orthodox members who didn’t have any children in the public school system.

“One thing is certain,” Gestetner said, “the orthodox community is growing and I think more and more of them will probably move into this area…. They will grow regardless of how a school board votes on a specific measure. They will grow no matter how a local government decides to vote.”
