A Good Year for Sloatsburg – New Spaces and Faces

Posted on 10 January 2019 by Editor

The face of Sloatsburg’s old main drag along Route 17 doesn’t look much changed, but the village experienced important changes in 2018. The revitalization effort that took root in conversations and small projects several years back has grown in spirit and action throughout the village.

The Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce gets together with members and more to celebrate a good year of work throughout the community. Join in on the fun Thursday, January 17, from 7-10 p.m. at Characters Restaurant.

2018 was a good year for the village, with Sloatsburgers working together to make improvements large and small. From streets signs and a new field at the Community Fields to a completely renovated Brook Street Park to new businesses in the village center, village grants, and a re-energized Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce, Sloatsburg appears poised for 2019.

The Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce has especially documented the new-found community spirit that promotes both the local business and the entire community. Marianna Krichevsky has led the Sloatsburg Chamber’s social media messaging, which recently has been covering new faces and places in the village. Krichevsky herself is also one of the new faces in the Village who has stepped up this past year and contributed locally.

A few other faces also quietly led the Village this past year, including Deputy Mayor and Village Trustee Peter Akey, who has championed change by taking care of community properties. Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright has been instrumental in helping to steer Sloatsburg through its on-going revitalization while continuing to embrace those local traditions residents enjoy, such as parades, celebrations and remembrances — all of which will be featured in this coming year’s 90th anniversary celebrations. Joyce Donohue provided pretty convincing community spirit in 2018 by working to help renovate Brook Street Park. She also volunteers at the Sloatsburg Food Pantry, as well as serves on the board, acts asĀ Sloatsburg Program Co-ordinator for the Elementary School Healthy Snack Program (between the Food Pantry and NENY Regional Food Bank) and leads the Sloatsburg 90th Anniversary Celebration Committee and Keepsake Journal.

Barbara Berntsen has had a busy year, helping to guide Harmony Hall, providing leadership to the resurgent Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce and acting as a revitalization driving force by opening the Village Blend coffee cafe, which now anchors Village Walk adjacent to the Commuter Lot, providing a warm beacon for sweet and otherwise food and drink.

Members and more will celebrate Sloatsburg and the Sloatsburg Chamber of Commerce at Characters Bar & Restaurant on Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. Following are a few more new faces and places in Sloatsburg that have popped up this past year.
