Meet local author and semi-legend Edward J. Lenik on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at the Tuxedo Park Library.

Lenik will discuss his most recent book, Keepers of the Pass: The Ramapough Lenape Indians, the third book in a series on the Ramapoughs, and companion volume to Indians in the Ramapos: Survival, Persistence and Presence, published in 1999, and Ramapough Mountain Indians: People, Places and Cultural Traditions published in 2011.

Lenik’s lecture will feature a slide show highlighting the rich Native American history of our immediate area.

Lenik’s dictum, “Dig into the records before you dig into the soil,” has served him well in his 30 plus years uncovering a vast array of regional evidence of the Native American presence, past and present.

According to Lenik’s research, an native trail and transportation route extended northward from Suffern through the Ramapough Pass to the Villages of Sloatsburg, Tuxedo, and Southfields, and still reveals itself to this day with rock shelters and archaeological sites that are currently evident.

As an archaeologist of this region for many years, Lenik has also developed a close relationship with the Ramapough Le-nape Nation and has interviewed tribal elders. Lenik draws on history and archaeology to discuss places, practices, folkways and lifeways that testify “We are still here.”

For more information on attending this event, please contact the Tuxedo Park Library at 845-351-2207 or visit the library’s online calendar to register (tuxedoparklibrary.org). Books will be available for sale and signing.
