Be on the lookout for the Christmas Train as it winds its way through Sloatsburg Saturday, December 10, delivering gifts to kids throughout the village. For nearly 60 years now, the Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 has partnered with other veteran groups, noteably, the Society of the 40 Men and 8 Horses, and recently with the Sloatsburg Fire Department, to provide holiday cheer with this annual community outreach event. The Sloatsburg Public Library is digging deep into the digital age with its new circulation and catalog upgrade, Enterprise. Due to go online this Thursday, December 8, the Enterprise catalog system, a product of SirsiDynix, one of the world’s largest providers of library management and software services, will be available throughout the entire Ramapo Catskill Library System. The new RCLS catalog system replaces the outdated Horizon. Continue Reading

The Sloatsburg Village Board met for its annual reorganization meeting Monday night, December 5, where the Village Board made year-long, and in some cases, multi-year appointments, to an empty Village Hall. None of the appointees attended the meeting. All Village Trustees were present, as was Village Clerk and Treasurer Thomas Bollatto and Village Attorney Joel Grossbarth. Continue Reading

The packed parking lot in front of the rambling white house across from the Sloatsburg Public Library meant another senior success. More than 40 people gathered on December 1 to take part in one of the popular Sloatsburg Senior Center’s outings. This particular event was the annual year-end holiday trip and included people from Sloatsburg as well as members of the Suffern and Ramapo senior groups. Sponsored by the Friends of the Sloatsburg Public Library, the fair attracts crafters from across Rockland County, with funds raised used to help improve library programs and services. A special evening honoring veterans takes place this Tuesday, November 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Sloatsburg’s Village Hall.
The program, which is entitled Remembering & Honoring All Veterans, will be hosted by Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright and is in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Continue Reading

Heavy equipment prowls the narrow streets of the village, whether at the corner of Washington Avenue and Rt. 17, along Seven Lakes Drive or on the hilly streets of Pine Grove Lakes. Continue Reading

The Pine Grove Lakes neighborhood in Sloatsburg is encountering some heavy construction on very narrow roads. With an Orange and Rockland crew channeling up Torne and Council Crest to Hillside Road to replace an old gas line, residents are getting a taste of the construction zone most other Sloatsburg residents experienced during recent sewer work throughout the village. The Sloatsburg Fire Department recently expanded into a second station, taking over the building on village property at Village Hall that formally housed Curves. Originally built for Sloatsburg’s sanitation trucks, before the village contracted garbage collection services out to the Rockland County Solid Waste Authority, the building has now come full circle as newly operational Station 2. Eight days after a powerful snow storm hit Sloatsburg, knocking out power to hundreds of residents, cleanup crews from the Village of Sloatsburg Public Works were busily clearing downed tree limbs and branches, especially focusing on the Pine Grove Lakes neighborhood. Orange and Rockland reported restored power to more than 128,698, or 96%, of the estimated 134,000 customers who lost some form of power from the late October storm. Continue Reading
